Islay (optional Jura) & the Argyll/Kintyre coast – 3 days to explore & experience

Islay – Visit Scotland

As this is your own private small group tour, the itinerary is very flexible and along the way, we can add additional nearby stops and depending on the weather it is also possible to swap the route of day 1 and day 3 around. So the route each day is a sample itinerary and can be amended if you prefer.

Day 1
  • We pick up from many locations, incl. the Stirling area.
  • We head out west through the Loch Lomond and Trossachs nationalpark. Loch Long and Loch Fyne, Inveraray and Lochgilphead and will have a brief stop along the way to the ferry port of Kennacraig.

The location of your accommodation will determine if on day 1, we will already be taking the ferry over to Islay and have more time on Islay

or alternatively stay the night on the mainland and then have more time for the many spectacular sights along the Argyll & Kintyre coast.

1st night

1st overnight options

(a)    You choose the type / price-category of your accommodation

For every location/area our guests have the choice to either stay at a hotel, B&B or hostel, it is up to you how much you wish to spend for the night and it makes no difference to the tour, whether we pick you up from an upmarket or budget place

(b)   You choose the location of your accommodation

  • Islay (prefered option to have 2 nights on Islay to allow for a full day tour of Islay)
  • Jura
  • on the mainland near to the ferry port of Kennacraig (i.e. the Tarbert of Lochgilphead area) – for example Argyll backpacker hostel
  • It would be possible to stay two nights at the same location
Day 2

We arrive into Kennacraig for the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry  – arriving into either Port Askaig or Port Ellen on Islay

The ferry has all conveniences, catering facilities, a restaurant/cafe, indoor seating and outdoor viewing for the stunning journey, which should allow you to either take a nap, go for a late breakfast/coffee, an early lunch or just enjoy enjoy the beautiful journey.

Time on Islay

We will have a tour of Islay with its various beautiful villages, Finlaggan, home of the MacDonalds’ Lordship of the isles, the beaches, a whiksy distillery (if you wish for example Bowmore, Laphroaig, Lagavulin or Ardbeg)

Port Charlotte, scenic Portnahaven, beaches, Kildalton 8th century celtic cross or take a walk to the Oa and the American monument above the sea cliffs.

Optional visit of the Isle of Jura

From Port Askaig across the sound of Jura it is a short ferry crossing over to Jura, a wild and remote island, quite different from Islay, with its many green fields, sheep and farms. Jura is also being dominated by the 3 Paps (prominent mountains) of Jura.

We should be able to accommodate everyon’e wishes and after our offical tour give everyone free time, so that could involve dropping off some at one of the whisy distilleries, others to go walking and take others across for a mini tour of 2-3 hours over to Jura, the Jura side trip would be of no extra cost to yourselves and allow for some stunning photo opportunities.

Apart from that we like to keep it very flexible, depending on the individuals preferences, some might wish to visit one or more whisky distilleries, some might wish to go walking in the nature reserves or along the coast, others prefer for us to take the short boat trip over to Jura to explore and savour some of this magical, wild and spectacular island.

As every group and individuals are different and we are small group, flexible and like to tailor make your trip according to your needs,

Add on / extension options, if you have more time (or potentially for day 1 and day 3) for:

Island extensions from Islay

  • longer stay on Islay (especially if you are into whisky)
  • longer stay on Jura (especially if you are into walking)
  • taking the ferry to Colonsay and spending time there (especially if you are into beaches)

Add ons/side-trips from our journey to Kennacraig/the Islay ferry

  • visit the small isle of Gigha

http://www.visitscotland.com/i…/towns-villages/gigha-p235281

  • from Tarbert/Kintyre travel around the Kilberry peninsula or to Skipnish castle with its great views of Arran
  • take the full loop around the Kintyre peninsula, incl. Carradale, Sadell with its abbey, Campbeltown, Macrihanish beach & sand dunes, Southend & the Mull of Kintyre & a walk to the tidal Daavar island -Davaar

2nd night

2nd overnight options

(a)    You choose the type / price-category of your accommodation

For every location/area our guests have the choice to either stay at a hotel, B&B or hostel, it is up to you how much you wish to spend for the night and it makes no difference to the tour, whether we pick you up from an upmarket or budget place

(b)   You choose the location of your accommodation

  • Islay (prefered option to have 2 nights on Islay to allow for a full day tour of Islay)
  • Jura
  • on the mainland near to the ferry port of Kennacraig (i.e. the Tarbert of Lochgilphead area)
  • It would be possible to stay two nights at the same location
Day 3

The location of your accommodation will determine if in the morning of day 3, we will still be on Islay – and still have a bit more time for Islay – or are already on the Scottish mainland and have more time for our return journey, which could include:

  • long  the stunning Kilberry route, depending on the tide, we might spot some seals, can see the ancient Kilberry slapstone visit beautiful Tarbert/Loch Fyne cross the mountains for a view of the Isle of Arran and a possible walk around Skipness castle and heading south along the Kintyre peninsula  via the stunning Machrihanish sand dunes and the surfbeach towards Campbeltown
  • We have a chance to walk over to the tidal Davaar tidal island and heading towards the Mull of Kintyre with views over to Northern Ireland from  Southend before completing our journey around Kintyre along the eastern shores through beautiful Carradale and views of the Isle of Arran.
  • At Tarbert/Loch Fyne we have the option to take the scenic short cut and ferry over to the Cowal penninsula from where via Loch Long and a stop at Loch Lomond we head back to Stirling.

Depending on your preferences and interests, the main places that have been agreed and discussed, the overall time we have left after our stops (especially in the winter months with shorter daylight hours), the places listed above are just a few among other nearby options, that we might be travelling through and see, stopping at and/or visiting along the way as on each of our friendly, flexible and personalised tours we maximise and offer you the best tour experience given the conditions on the day (for example if it is pouring down with rain on one side of a mountain range, we believe in offering you the alternative sunny route on the other side of the mountains, etc.)

Subject to availability possible overnight (hostel, bed & breakfast, hotel, camping) options do all exist for your 3 days+ tour. As there are too many possible places to stay at, we can check room availability for your preferred option at the time of your enquiry/booking.

Visits, A to B journeys & walks

Concerning same day VISITS (i.e. no scenic touring & multi-stopping involved), A to B journeys & day WALKS (from October to April)

Example only for a same day VISIT, A to B journey or day WALK:

  • Pick you up from A (i.e. where you live or stay)

  • Drive for 2.5 hours (in this example) from A to B

  • At B you have free time or a VISIT (a town, castle, whisky distillery, museum, attraction, event or similar at your own expense) or go for a WALK

  • After a few hours at the end of your VISIT Unicorn Tours picks you up again from B or meets you at the other end of your WALK ( & often I meet you half way into the walk, as I am parked at the far side of the trail, where your walking path ends. On a circular walk I might join you – please note there is no extras payable for those semi-guided same day walks.)

  • From B we drive back for 2.5 hours (in this example) to A and drop you off there or anywhere else you choose/pre-arranged

We only charge for the driving time in this example = 2.5 hours from A to B + 2.5 hours from B back to A = 5 hours

5 hours in this example = half of the 10 hour standard daily rate

                                             ———————————————
