Shetland is a captivating archipelago located north of the Orkney Isles & is known for its dramatic landscapes, rich Viking history and vibrant wildlife. Shetland is over 115 miles / 185 km long from Fair Isle in the south to Muckle Flugga in the north and has a total of 1697 miles / 2730 kms of stunning coastline. There are hundreds of deep long stunning voes (fjords) and you are never more than 3 miles / 5 kms from the sea on the Shetland Isles. The largest island – called the Shetland Mainland is Scotland’s 3rd largest island. 16 of the Shetland Isles are inhabited. With 6000 years of human history, 138 sandy beaches and 22,000 people it is a truly spectacular place. All islands combined Shetland has over 100 islands (not counting 100s niore skerries & islets). The Shetland Isles boast spectacular, wild, high & rugged cliffs, sandy beaches, and a unique blend of Scottish and Norse heritage. On Unst Shetland’s most northerly inhabited island, there is a higher density of Viking sites per square mile than in the whole of Scandinavia. Unst in particular is also renowned for its boat building heritage and hosts the Unst boat haven museum. The largest island, the Shetland Mainland, features the charming town of Lerwick, where visitors can explore historic sites & local crafts. Shetland is renowned for its diverse wildlife, including 1 millions of breeding seabirds & 200,000 puffins, seals, whales, porpoises, dolphins & otters and the famous Shetland ponies. In June there are 19 hours of daylight. The islands also celebrate a strong cultural identity through traditional music, festivals, and the iconic Up Helly Aa fire festival, making Shetland a truly distinctive destination.
