Itinerary

Isle of Mull & Iona – a Hebridean paradise – weekend tour

This tour is open to anyone, everyone welcome, but as on Friday some may still have summer Uni classes at Stirling Uni, we will be leaving, as soon as the last person in the group finishes the last lecture “before the reading week starts” and is ready.

We are spending the night in central Oban, the pre-booked hostel is £24 per person per night,

The other extras are the Oban to Craignure/Isle of Mull return ferry for £7.40 per person

and the Fionnphort/Isle of Mull to the Isle of Iona return ferry for £3.50 per person.

Day 1 / Friday, 26th July / Travel to Oban

  • We head through the Trossachs nationalpark to Oban, a beautiful and bustling ferry port and the main gateway to many of the Hebridean islands.
  • We leave as early as possible in the day, whenever the 8 participants are ready to start and if we can leave earlier, we can include many more places along the way and also have longer stops.
  • If it is a late departure, it is a scenic drive to Oban with one or two stops along the way.
  • We kept the peak summer pricing low to reflect, that on day 1 it might just be the transfer to Oban

Day 2 / Saturday, 27th July / Isle of Iona & Mull and drive back to Stirling

(with the option to stay longer in Oban / on Mull or Iona independently)

  • we take the stunning 45 minutes crossing from beautiful Oban to the Isle of Mull with all round views of islands, the Lismore lighthouse, Duart castle, mountains and the sea – the ferry port is 5 minutes from the hostel and to avoid the later busier ferries and the busier roads and to beat the rush to allow you to make the most of your time on the Isle of Mull and Isle of Iona, the currently booked ferry times are: Saturday, 27th July departing Oban 7.30 am – to arrive in Craignure/Isle of Mull at 08.20 am**. This ferry is a huge and does provide cafe/restaurant and breakfast facilities. The route is spectacular and will lead past the Isle of Kerrara, past the Lismore lighthouse with all round great views to Mull with views of Duart castle.
  • On the Isle of Mull, a nature & wildlife haven, we will be exploring the SW parts with some of the most dramatic and wild scenery
  • before arriving on the isle of Iona (the Mull to Iona ferry is a short a few minutes regular passenger only ferry) Scotland’s spiritual capital with awesome beaches to watch the sunset and enjoy the views across to the isles of Mull, Staffa, Treshniish, Coll, Tiree, Colonsay, Scarba, Jura and the mountains on the Scottish mainland
  • We are travelling at the height of summer and along the stunning, wild & spectacular Westcoast, you may we get a real Atlantic coast Hebridean “get away from it all” feeling
  • From the Isle of Iona we are heading back onto the Isle of Mull and travelling along the spectacular Northwestcoast of Mull, spectacular coastal scenery, island views, wildlife before we head back to Oban – the currently booked ferry is departing Craignure/Isle of Mull at 17;05 pm – to arrive back into Oban at 17.55** pm and travel to Stirling – journey time 2.5 hours, if without stops.
  • **Please note, if you, the participants on this tour prefer different ferry timings and other timings suit you better, provided everyone in the group is happy, we might be able to to request and change these times, subject to vehicle space on the ferry

*The reason why we advertise “a later departure on Friday, 26th July and a 1.5 day tour is that some of the international summer students may still have some classes on.

At Unicorn Tours from our side we are happy to depart as early as 8am, but we would like to give everyone who books this trip a chance to come along without having to skip/miss/compromise with their studies and lectures – so we will be leaving as early as possible, but leave the timing open for now, if for example of the group of 8, there are 3 who have nothing on and can leave at 8am – 1 has a lecture which finishes at 11 am, 2 have a lecture, that finishes at 12 noon and 2 have a lecture that finishes at 1pm, then 1pm in this example would be the time everyone is free and we would be happy to leave as early as 1.15 pm. We would like to keep it flexible and allow you, who wish to join the tour to all come along and once the last in the group is ready to go, we start the tour, so it could be 3.15 pm or in the morning for example
